Emirati representation London Design Week 2016

This year the United Arab Emirates is exceptionally represented at London Design Week.

For the first time the British Council UAE are collaborating with Emirati curator Hind Bin Demaithan Al Qemzi to participate in the “Design Connections” programme which takes place from 18th September 2016 in London.

Design Connections is the British Council’s annual industry networking programme. Taking place during the London Design Festival – one of the biggest design festivals in the world – it offers directors and curators from design museums, centres and festivals around the world an inspiring and immersive introduction to the best of the festival, alongside meetings with leading designers and organisations. The programme connects these key individuals to designers and organisations with the aim of brokering new collaborations and partnerships, as well as providing the opportunity for networking, learning and sharing with international counterparts. The week long programme will take place from September 18th -23rd. During the fast paced week, Hind will have the unique opportunity to attend the London Design Biennale, visit key design projects at Victoria & Albert museum, Studio visits to Barber Osgerby, Bethan Laura Wood and Allies and Morrison studios along with tours of  the Crafts Council Exhibition and Serpentine Pavilion.

Hind is currently working as  freelance designer and curator having previously held the position of Head Curator of Dubai Design District (d3), the region’s first community dedicated to the design industry.

As an aspiring Emirati artist recognised for her bold concept of photography and video installations, she describes her work as a depiction of reality through the creation of illusion. Hind identifies herself as a “master of science in the arts” a discoverer and a creator.

Hind holds an MFA in Video for Performance & Supplemental Concentration in Integrated Media from California Institute of the Arts – CalArts and a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from Zayed University.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. Her most recent work includes an interactive video design installation “w hay hy ilyama’a” part of ‘Emirati Expressions IV: Conventions, a series of video objects “Sadu-Pixel” part of Portrait of A Nation Exhibition commissioned by ADMAF and video design for immersive performances, primarily in Los Angeles.

Additionally brothers Ahmed and Rashid Al Shabib from Cultural Engineering/ Brown Book fame are participating in this year London Design Biennale which will comprise of an Exhibition taking place at Sommerset House, in London from September 8th. The project, based on the Falaj system highlights the Falaj as an agricultural and recreational space for both public and private uses. In overview, the installation sets a palm plantation model in principal, through which the audience is introduced to the functionality, materiality, agriculture, and architecture of an intricate system once used across the Arabian Peninsula.

Up to 40 nations across 6 continents are to participate in the first London Design Biennale 2016. Set to be held at the Somerset House in London, the exhibition invites participants to explore the theme Utopia by Design. Compelling and interactive design solutions representing teams from all over the world, explore ideas pertaining to cities, sustainability, culture, energy and more.
